How to Build a Winning Internship Program towards healthier engagement

Introduction: 

A successful internship is achievable with the combined efforts of the intern, managers, and supervisors to ensure a valuable experience. Successful internships offer a great opportunity for both employers and students to benefit and achieve their goals (Campbell, 2020). 

Develop a clearly defined job description 

With proper direction, everyone can function effectively and achieve their goals. College students have a great opportunity to learn and grow during their internships, even if they have limited experience and knowledge of their employer's expectations (Trevor, 2009). Supervisors can take the first step towards ensuring the success of their interns by beginning the planning process.  A genuine job description is extremely helpful in defining the internship and evaluating performance throughout the entire process.

Schedule regular performance reviews 

Regular performance reviews are a great way to help students track their progress and receive honest feedback on their performance. A performance review is a great opportunity to help the intern learn and grow, while also providing valuable feedback on how well they are meeting their employer's expectations (Trevor, 2009). 

Keep intern busy

Creating short and long-term projects for your intern will provide them with opportunities to showcase their skills and achieve great results. Interns have the opportunity to learn and grow in their roles, and employers can provide meaningful assignments that benefit both the intern and the company. While some interns may feel they have downtime, this can be a chance to explore new skills and take on additional responsibilities. Employers can also provide guidance and support to help interns make the most of their experience. While there may be occasional challenges, both interns and employers can work together to create a positive and productive internship experience (Yazinski, 2009).

Help your intern to find a mentor within the Organization 

Having a mentor as an intern is definitely beneficial! Having a mentor during an internship can be extremely helpful in quickly adapting to a new job. With their guidance, interns can absorb a lot of new information and navigate the waters of their new role with ease. Having a good mentor can be extremely beneficial for interns who are still learning the ropes (Campbell, 2020).

Show appreciation for the work that your interns do

Being acknowledged for who you are and what you accomplish can really boost your self-esteem! Interns can have a great experience and excel in their job when they feel valued as individuals and have supportive employers who are fully committed to their success (Yazinski, 2009).

Conclusion

Internships are extremely important in determining one's future path. It not only allows students and graduates to obtain real-world experience in the workplace, but it also allows them to build the necessary abilities to stand out in a crowded employment market.
